Simply awesome outing considering Tarpley was facing the top hitting team in the South Atlantic League (a Colorado Rockies Affiliate). Stephen picked up his team leading 8th "Quality Start", he yielded just two runs off 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9 batters! His ERA grew slightly from 2.32 to 2.34. With this performance Tarpley temporarily moves into the team's second spot for leading strikeouts with 85 Ks.

Tarpley pitched 6 innings complete, gave up 3 earned runs off 7 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 0. Stephen got off to a great start retiring the first 6 Lakewood BlueClaw batters in order (striking out the side in the 2nd) before the BlueClaws turned things around after a Tarpley strike-out in the 3rd. Stephen appeared to be settling into a serious grove when play was interrupted by a Lakewood batter that fouled a ball off his own foot which delayed the game for about 3 minutes. Moments after play resumed, Stephen struck him out with an outside pitch that brought both the BlueClaw batting coach and skipper out of the dug-out in protest for the second time of the evening. Things got ugly when the batting coach was tossed for bumping the ump and took his time walking off the field. All told, the back to back delays amounted to about a 7 minute interruption. After play resumed Stephen gave up 3 back to back run producing singles. The Power gave great run support which allowed Stephen to recovered and take the 7-4 win while recording his 8th victory of the season. Stephen continues his growing string of outstanding starts but was rewarded with a no-decision. Despite suffering from an elevated temperature from a tonsil infection, Tarpley pitched 6 2/3 shutout inning on the road against the Lakewood BlueClaws before exiting the game on pitch count (90 pitches) with a score of 0 - 0. On the night Stephen struck out 7, walked 0, and surrendered no runs on 4 hits. Tarpley also had 3 put-outs and a shattered bat to add to his evening while lowering his ERA to 2.06. West Virginia Power go on to lose 0-1. Stephen later reported to me that while he felt under the weather, he was very fortunate to have all of his pitch variants working well that evening and credited that fact with his ability to remain in the game as long as he did. Tarpley was stellar for West Virginia earning the victory over the Kansas City Royals' affiliate team, the Lexington Legends. At one point retiring 9 consecutive batters, the lefty went six innings and allowed one run on five hits while striking out a season-high eight batters. He improved his record to 7 wins, 2 loses and 2 no-decisions while dropping his ERA to 2.29. Tarpley has now amassed 54 strikeouts to 17 walks over 61 innings of play.

Matt Scaffner's CAMDEM CHAT game review for SB*Nation
After spending what seems to be an eternity in Extended Spring Training, Stephen is raring to be assigned to a full season team! He says that his pitching has been more than solid and that his body has been feeling great for over a month now and that he can’t wait to demonstrate to his future teammates, competitors and management just how capable he truly is! Until then, Stephen said he is doubling down on his training and focus while he attempts to master the virtues of being patient.
In last Saturday's extended spring game Stephen was allowed 3 innings, logged 3Ks, 1BB, no hits, no runs. Stephen said he's been feeling great for more than three weeks and can't wait to contribute to a full-season team! ...Will keep you posted.Stephen throwing at Extended Spring Training. Feeling good and looking forward to joining a full-season team ASAP.
How Stephen Tarpley is Following the Successful Adjustment He Made With the Orioles - Posted by Tim WilliamsThe Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Stephen Tarpley in the Travis Snider trade at the end of January. When the lefty first arrived in the system, I talked with him and fellow southpaw Steven Brault, who was the other player acquired for Snider. At the time, Tarpley had barely been throwing, with only one bullpen under his belt in the Spring. Today he threw two innings of live batting practice, giving me my first extended look at his stuff.
I talked with Tarpley after the outing, discussing what he has been working on with the Pirates. He’s still in the “no touch” phase of things, where the Pirates watch and evaluate his stuff. However, Tarpley will be approaching the pitching coaches soon to get some advice on his mechanics. The specific thing he wants to work on is staying back, and being consistent with his delivery. That was an issue in the past for Tarpley, and he made some improvements after switching to a three-quarters arm slot. He’s hoping to get back to that success and those mechanics from the second half of last year, in order to start off strong this season. Check out the video- by clicking the picture above for Tarpley explaining what he needs to work on with his mechanics, along with some video of his outing, including a three pitch strikeout to end his day.
