Stephen exited Tuesday’s game with a one run lead after pitching 6 complete shutout innings yielding 1 hit, 3 walks, 1 hit-by-pitch, and 7 strikeouts. While this was not his prettiest outing (pitch count was a bit high), Stephen made effective use of his mid-nineties fastball, change-up and a wicked slider that kept Cochise batters off balance and even appeared to dumbfound the home-plate umpire on occasion. Scottsdale's record elevated to 12 and 3.
This was to be the seven inning opener of a doubleheader but after Scottsdale’s normally lights-out closer gave up the tying run in the top of the 7th, both teams found themselves embroiled in a 14 inning battle ending with Scottsdale on top.

If you love baseball and were in attendance, you were treated to a great 12 inning game between Scottsdale and Yavapai. It started with a 6 inning shutout pitching duel between Stephen Tarpley and Yavapai’s superb right-hander Peter Lenstrohm before Scottsdale scored two runs in the 7th. In summary, Stephen pitched 7 strong shutout innings and got 9 Ks before surprising all by returning in the 8th with 90 pitches already thrown. He then gave up a single, a HR and finally a walk before exiting the game. When questioned about his return in the 8th, Stephen took full credit by stating that he convinced his coach to let him back in the game on a short leash… Too bad for his ERA, the “leash” wasn't quite short enough… -smile
Stephen was called upon to close out the continuation of a tied game from the previous day. He pitched a two inning shutout victory against a highly competitive El Paso team before returning to the mound to open game one of the official Saturday doubleheader. This game produced similar results with Stephen going 3 shutout innings. He had a total of 5 strikeouts on the day where Scottsdale took the 4 game sweep bringing their season record to 5-0. |
