(Sorry for NY Audio feed, the Red Sox announcers were the ones to catch live that day, they were a lot more captivated by the action on the field)...86 of 105 made it out knowing Stephen wasn't there. The quasi-surprise was a strange feeling for us and a bigger one for Stephen for sure. The Love was overwhelming, again, thank you all!
Tarpley Receives 2019 James P. Dawson AwardThe New York Yankees today announced that left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley is the recipient of the 2019 James P. Dawson Award, given annually to the most outstanding Yankees rookie in spring training.
Tarpley, 26, held opponents scoreless in 11.1 innings pitched over 10 spring training appearances (one start), allowing just 6H and 1BB with 8K, and was the only Yankee to toss at least 10.0 innings this spring without giving up a run. The Los Angeles, Calif., native made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2018. The award was established in honor of James P. Dawson (1896-1953), who began a 45-year career with The New York Times as a copy boy in 1908. Eight years later, he became boxing editor and covered boxing and baseball until his death during spring training in 1953. Two winners of the honor, Tony Kubek in 1957 and Tom Tresh in 1962, went on to win the American League “Rookie of the Year” Award. The Dawson Award first was presented to rookie Norm Siebern by Manager Casey Stengel in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the conclusion of spring training in 1956. New York Yankees beat writers vote on the winner. In conjunction with the award, Andújar received a watch from Betteridge Jewelers. Awesome diet and relentless work-ethics resulted in 25lbs fat loss! Day one on his break, Stephen told me he was going to build a "grasshopper" body with powerful legs, tight mid-section, powerful / lean arms and a "bird chest" that won't preternaturally decelerate his pitching arm as it crosses his body on follow-through. (says it will give him a live-er arm and be less stressful on his frame).

Pimpsner's full article.Pictured here congratulating his former Pirates teammates who just won the overall season championship over his new Yankee team… Stephen stood in the rare position of “winning the Ship” no matter which team finished 1st! While he might’ve preferred a ring from his new team, he's proud to have Won the first-half Championship Game for his Pirates which got them into the overall finals! As friends and family know, I will be taking some time off from updating this web site to focus on a minor health issue and to spend some quality time with my daughter before she prepares to head to college next year.
Best of luck Son, I love you! Dad. Yankees acquired outfielder Tito Polo and LHP Stephen Tarpley from the Pittsburgh Pirates, completing the August 1 deal that sent RHP Ivan Nova to the Steel City.2nd Quality Start in two weeksStarting pitcher Stephen Tarpley showed increased control over his fastball for the second straight week. Stephen pitched 6 2/3 innings, yielding 3 runs on 6 hits with no walks while striking out six. 61 of his 95 pitches were thrown for strikes.
Stephen exited the game with 2 outs in the top of the 7th with bases clear and game tied at 3. His record remains at 5 wins and 3 loses. Bradenton would go on to snap their 4 game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Palm Beach in the bottom of the 11th. Stephen Tarpley went 6 innings in a rain interrupted game to pick up his 5th season win in front of his home crowd.
Tarpley gave up one run in each of the first two innings before the rain hit. After play resumed, Stephen and his teammates caught fire. His offense spotted him a 3-2 lead in the 3rd and that proved enough. On the night, Stephen went 6 innings yielding 3 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6 en-route to victory. His record now stands at 5 wins and 3 losses. Stephen Tarpley exited the game after 6 full innings of work yielding a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th inning. Bradenton's run support came alive in the top of the 8th inning with 4 runs and 1 more in the 9th to win the game 5-1 taking the series against St.Lucie.
Tarpley's 1.5 ERA on the night improves his overall ERA to 4.18. He threw 81 pitches, yielding 1 earned run on 7 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 5 on his way to another no decision. His record remains 4 wins and 3 losses on the season. * Short But Sweet * After years of trying, rain-outs, aborted trips and all sorts of madness, I finally got to see one inning before a massive tropical storm flooded the ballpark! I saw the warm-up and one inning where Stephen walked the first batter, popped-out the second batter, picked-off the batter he walked and finish with a strikeout to end the inning... So I guess I can finally say "I saw my Son pitch professionally!" :-)
For the second week straight Stephen has struggled finding the strike zone consistently on his home field. On a beastly hot afternoon, Stephen was only able to pitch 2.2 innings before yielding to pitch count limitations. During this outing he barely threw half of his pitches for strikes resulting in 6 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. His teammates came to his rescue in the bottom of the 7th inning with 4 additional runs to erase any chance of a lose. Marauders win 11-8 and Tarpley settles for a no-decision.
\\\\ Full story available at Pirates Prospects with subscription. /// Tarpley Suffers His Season's 3rd LossThe box score highlights 4 well pitched innings and the two that got away... While the story line will rightfully read "Tarpley struggles, walking 4 while striking out 6 and allowing 6 earned runs over 6 innings", the radio hosts pointed out that he actually pitched very well with the exception of two innings. Stephen's highlight inning was his 6th where he made quick work by striking out the side with only 11 pitches. Two 4-pitch walks and a 3 run HR in the 2nd yielded 3 runs. In the 5 inning trouble came again in the forum of walks and sloppy play after a successful pick-off maneuver caught the 1st base runner napping in a 1st and 3rd situation... results, runner safe at home and 2nd. Stephen's ERA elevated back up to 3.96
All three of Stephen's losses have come at home. He has 1 home and 3 away victories. Even more interesting, Stephen's ERA is 6.26 at home yet a solid 2.12 on the road. |
