Starting pitcher Stephen Tarpley picked up his second win of the season as he pitched a season-high seven innings from the mound. Tarpley allowed eight hits, three runs, two walks, four strikeouts and picked-off one runner at 1st.
"Tarpley seemed to also have received the organizational memo on the importance of the groundball. Yet another Orioles farmhand would finish his day with twelve groundouts". - Camden Chat j.q. higgins on Aug 11 2014, 8:30a
Tarpley was working a one hit shutout through the fourth inning. After a lengthy layoff induced by some great IronBird offense in the bottom of the fourth, Tarpley hit a speed bump in the fifth giving up three runs from several well placed ground balls but later returned to forum to pitch shutout innings in the 6th and 7th to close out his night and bring the series with Jamestown even at 1-1.
When asked about the fifth inning Tarpley replied "Through four, no one could touch my inside fastball. After the long rest, it was decided to move my fastball to the outside corner (of the plate) which gave batters a chance to catch up and shoot some opposite field hits down the foul lines and score runs. In the 6th and 7th I went back to pitching the inside part of the plate and I was lights out!" "The real harm (outside of the runs) was that the extra pitches I spent getting out of the fifth would ultimately rob my ability to pitch my way into the eighth inning!"
